Back off my territory Fox News! Back off!

The real question here is being ignored. I can see how the ‘news anchors’ throughout the day have to be reliant on staffers to do their show-prep and get the facts right. But the opinion hosts should have a stranglehold on everything that hits the screen. Nothing goes on-air during my radio show unless I’ve previewed it or edited it myself beforehand. You just can’t trust people to help you with things like this. All it takes is one lazy or partisan staffer to screw things up and make you look like a jackass. So why aren’t the opinion hosts keeping better track of what hits the air? Everyone benefits from a tight ship.

I’ve always liked Carlson. He’s not afraid to push the Libertarian line and hang out with people like Dennis Hoff or Bubba the Love Sponge — something any self-described Conservative would avoid at any cost. That’s something the Republicans should embrace. Once they break out of this ‘uptight, suit-wearing’ mold that the Democrats have shaped for them, their party will be a lot better off. This is not to say that Conservative talkers like Rush Limbaugh should moderate their positions; they should simply make it clear that there’s room in the party for people like Tucker or Meghan McCain. People who drink and shout out lyrics to songs playing on the jukebox at the top of their lungs. People who are fun.

A revamp like this is in order, all while the hardliners stick to their positions.

Congrats, Tucker.

If you think about this from a logical prospective, it’s a great move. If all four networks were set to air the same episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, they’re destined to split the audience. But if one of those networks tosses on a rerun of Seinfeld, they’re destined to grab (at the very least) the folks who aren’t big fans of ‘Raymond’.

Still, the President’s audience will dwarf that of ‘Lie To Me’.

Of Note: Cheney is semi-vindicated in his ‘release-the-other-memos’ rant from the first part of this interview. Even Obama’s Intel Chief agrees with that point.

Oh, he’s not done yet. They just have to take a commercial break now and again to pay the camera operators and keep Sean Hannity’s compound fully stocked with Veggie Tales DVDs. In the second part (there’s a total of four, the other two air tomorrow night) Cheney tackles the release of memos describing interrogation techniques on high-value terror-detainees during the Bush administration. It’s interesting to note that for all the hate he conjures up, Cheney never raises his voice or shows aggression. Whether you agree or disagree, he provides a calm, coherent argument without any signs of angst.

NEW YORK — “You are not alone,” Glenn Beck likes to say. For the disaffected and aggrieved Americans of the Obama era, he couldn’t have picked a better rallying cry.

Beck, an evening host on the Fox News Channel, is suddenly one of the most powerful media voices for the nation’s conservative populist anger. Barely two months into his job at Fox, his program is a phenomenon: It typically draws about 2.2 million viewers, more than any other cable news host except Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity, despite being on at 5 p.m., a slow shift for cable news.

Whoever hacked into Fox News’ official Twitter account a few minutes ago didn’t waste time spell checking. Bill O’Reilly’s name is spelled incorrectly. My guess is this doesn’t last too long so check it out while you have a chance. Unless, of course, Bill O’Reilly changed his last name and came out of the closet this morning. Now THAT would be a big story…

I don’t watch Fox News all that much (I tend to stick to CNN unless Rick Sanchez is on) but I used to tune in to Shepard Smith’s ‘Studio B’ from time to time. Mostly because he tends to screw up a lot and say things that will eventually end up on YouTube. But for the past six months or so, Shepard Smith has tried so hard to be viewed as the antithesis of Fox News that it has become unwatchable. We get it, you’re independent. You don’t tow the Fox News line… Good for you.

Shepard has already signed a big fat contract so he feels comfortable saying whatever he wants at this point. He makes $8 million a year to read a TelePrompter. I don’t blame him for taking the big payday (hell, I would have done the same thing) but I do blame him for being an idiot.

Things started to get weird when Smith felt the need to put ‘Joe the Plumber’ in the hot seat, confirming my belief that anyone who dares disagree with Barack Obama and the Democratic surge will be ridiculed and put aside. But it wasn’t just that, he went from the nice, generic anchorman to some smarmy hack who steps out of line just to get some attention. The pot was boiling then but the kettle didn’t whistle until I saw this clip. It was recorded during the Fox News Internet show ‘The Strategy Room’ and the guest, comedian Nick DiPaolo, claimed the mainstream media was ‘in the tank’ for Barack Obama. Shep fervently disagreed.

This is not some crazy assertion, that the media was biased towards Obama. The Washington Post even went to the extent of admitting it’s biased election coverage. And they weren’t alone. Are you going to tell me, Shepard, that MSNBC didn’t slant coverage in favor of Obama? Are you going to tell me that the network newscasts weren’t biased? Are you going to tell me that the fervent way in which the press eviscerated Sarah Palin was acceptable? You couldn’t possibly…

Allow me to let you folks in on a little secret, Shepard Smith wants a real anchor job. Though the anti-Couric static has settled a bit now, it will return soon enough. Smith signed a three year deal and he’s doing everything he can to get the attention of the head honchos over at the Big Three. He wants a bigger audience, more respect and adulation from his peers. Though I’m glad he has goals and dreams, I’d love it just as much as you if he’d stick to the facts or, in this case, reality.

We’re just leaving Charlotte, NC, where we were working on a story about a neighborhood watch group that carries firearms.

The story is scheduled to air on the Fox Report w/ Shepard Smith. But we’re in no hurry to rush the “tape” back to our Atlanta office, a satellite truck or some other conventional “feed point.”

That’s because this story was shot with “tapeless” digital cameras, edited on a laptop computer and transmitted to New York over the Internet using a cellular phone network. Click on the video to watch the process.
