The Department of Defense says a vehicle borne suicide bomber detonated himself in Khowst province eastern Afghanistan. In the process he killed 16, including 14 children, and wounded 58 others.
Not surprisingly, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for this disturbing attack.

Zahara, 13, and her older cousin, Shamsiya, were walking to the Mirwais Mina girl’s school in Kandahar, Afghanistan when three men on motorbikes suddenly blocked their path and sprayed something in their faces.
They thought it was water – just a prank – until it started to sting. The two girls were the victims of a brutal acid attack. Their crime according to the militants who threw the acid: going to school. Now NBC News’ Jim Maceda reports

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Armed assailants attacked a man and gouged out his eyes in front of his family during a gruesome assault in southern Afghanistan, officials said Sunday.

A U.S. Marine from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit flinches in a firefight with the Taliban near Garmser in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The Marine was uninjured in the exchange.
