President Obama, still on vacation in Hawaii, made some comments just moments ago about the Northwest attack but I found the tail end of that presser interesting. I’ll tell you why after the cut.
Just moments ago, the President addressed, for the first time, the failed terror attack on a Detroit-bound Northwest flight on Christmas day. His nuanced comments on the attack weren’t of much interest to me but tacked on to the end of his comments were several stones aimed at Iran. Obama talked about the protests, the government’s bloody crackdown and called for the release of those arrested. This is, by far, the most aggressive the President has been on this topic. In the past, most notably after the last election in Iran, Obama seemed determined to stay out of Iranian affairs. The President may have wanted to quietly support the protesters to avoid making them appear as tools of the West but he’s dropping that tactic now.
On the recent violence and protests in Iran, Obama says: “It’s telling when governments fear the aspirations of their own people more than the power of any other nation.”
“We call upon the Iranian government to abide by the international obligation that it has to respect the rights of its own people,” he says, calling on the regime to release those “unjustly detained.”
Politico has an overview of the President’s comments on both topics.
