A Short Note From The Road… (+History)

The whole I’m-going-to-record-one-show-per-day thing isn’t working out quite like I planned it. I’ll be back in Chicago on Sunday and we’ll return to regularly scheduled programming after that. For those of you who have been with me for the past several years, I want to take a minute to bring you up to date on exactly what I’m doing. For those of you who are new, maybe this will serve as a tool to give you an idea just who I am and what I do when I’m not on the radio.

I started out with a website called Bareknucklepolitics.com in 2004. BKP served as a clearinghouse for the latest shock video and politically charged media on the Internet. It was news, uncensored. At least that’s how the tagline went.

Anyhow, that website served millions of visitors and cranked on in some form or another until 2007. That year, I started hosting several radio shows in West Palm Beach, FL and, thinking I’d be better served by using my name as a domain, I switched to shawnwasson.com and fumbled through several CMS systems to power this new site. If you’ve been around for a while you know to expect the unexpected. I change the look and feel of whatever website I’m running about once every 24 hours or so. Really, it’s a terrible thing to do and I blame it on some undiagnosed condition.

As the radio show developed, I created the moniker ‘The News Junkie’ and purchased the domain wjnoblog.com. That site was created to boost traffic for the local radio station I was working for. Somewhere along the way, I realized that I don’t have the time in any given day to really run a blog by myself. I even tried opening things up so others could help with the workload. No dice. It became clear that the best way for me to get my content to a mass audience would be to work with various platforms and syndicate the stuff I was cranking out. I mean, I do about 40 laps around the Internet every day and I have a great nose for what people will be interested in, so it was best for me to syndicate content as others have syndicated on-air products. I was no stranger to this technique as those of you who followed my stint over at LiveLeak.com know. So I made the move to Chicago and cranked things up a bit — Chicago’s WGN Radio 720 and Tribune Interactive, some big megaphones.

So just what the hell do you do?

I add content to probably 100 websites at a pop. From LaTimes.com, ChicagoTribune.com and every other Tribune newspaper website to TV news station websites across the country. Here’s a link to my feed on WGNRADIO.com. I scour the Internet for the latest and greatest and generally find myself days ahead of the pack when it comes to trends and news stories. Whereas Perez Hilton or Matt Drudge have a single platform that delivers their content to millions, I reach a massive audience from every direction. This, of course, when I’m not hosting The News Junkie Radio Show or The Daily Fix updates.

I’ve been quite bad over the years when it comes to informing you on the nuts and bolts of this whole operation. I’m trying to change that. I’ll do my best to give you a solid picture of who I am and what I’m doing in the future. Know this: I’m 28-years-old and at my core I favor no political party. I do my best to sort through the bullshit and give it to you straight. I love a great drink almost as much as I love a great bar. In fact, most nights you can catch me at the Wabash Tap in the South Loop of Chicago. I’m not your average radio host; I’m loud, I have loads of tattoos and (off-air) I use what your mom would call colorful language. I love great music and if you’ve caught the show on WGN Radio, you know that I have a knack for playing great music. I’m no stranger to a turntable (I was a DJ for years), a guitar (started playing when I was 12) or a library (I read like a maniac — loads of history).

I’m quite possibly the only person under the age of 30, rockin’ Converse and a firecracker mouth on a major market radio station in the country. I’m not shy about tackling controversial topics on-air, everything’s game. And, finally, I’m not hiding from you.

You can contact me in about a million ways.

I’m on Facebook and Twitter… and I’m always available by email — shawnwasson -at- gmail dot com. You can call me when I’m on-air and soon we’ll have a toll-free line set up in the home studio. Reach out. Let me know how I’m doing or just hang on for the ride. Either way, I’m just getting started.
