Chaos In Iran – Protests Rage After ‘Rigged’ Election

There are several great resources to catch the latest information on the aftermath of what appears to be a rigged election in Iran. Tehran Bureau is doing most of the hard round-it-up legwork so here’s a link in that direction. Their Sunday update was incredibly informative. Here’s a tidbit:

Also from my balcony facing north into the mountains, people are on their rooftops shouting “marg bar diktator” and “allaho akbar” ["Death to the Dictator!" and "God is Great!"]

total re-enactment of ‘57 !!!!!!

the press is saying “tehran was calm today” — not so. it was in the daytime but since 5pm things have heated up. i’ve talked to friends in different neighborhoods; in Sa’adat Abad and Yousef Abad and Zafar — all over it is “ghogha.” My mom also was in Parkway two hours ago (its 9:30 pm) and there were mass demos and people handing out Mousavi’s latest bayanieh as fliers … and tear gas and attacks by “truckfuls” of Guard-e Vije …

Mousavi reportedly was granted a mojaves for the march tmrw, so it should hopefully be legit and safe.

That was last night, of course. And today, Mousavi is making an appearance at a major protest. At this point, Mousavi is still alive and well but Ahmadinejad will not guarantee his security.

This post will be updated throughout the day with news on this story. (All Times Central)

10:00AM: New poll suggests Ahmadinejad had a comfortable lead before the election?

10:38AM: Andrew Sullivan covers Twitter’s effect on the Iranian situation.

10:45AM: Moussavi’s appearance at a toned-down protest without incident.

CNN Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour said supporters avoided chanting slogans, fearful of violating an Interior Ministry ban on political demonstrations imposed in the wake of unrest sparked by Ahmadinejad’s win.

Monday’s rally is seen as a repeat of a march which Moussavi supporters staged prior to the election, which many analysts saw as a sign he would present Ahmadinejad with a much tougher challenge than the results indicate.

AP pins total attendance in the ‘hundreds of thousands‘.

11:07AM: This video is just starting to catch fire: Ahmadinejad is not my President.

Sound familiar?

11:32AM: I don’t want to start a conspiracy where none is needed but I’d like to know why the Tehran Bureau site I linked above is down at the moment. Victims of a clampdown?

Their hosting company, MidPhase, looks to be based out of Chicago. Bandwidth overages?

11:43AM: Shots fired at Iran vote ‘dispute’ rally

Iranian state television is reporting that gunshots have been heard at a rally in Tehran where thousands have defied an official ban to show their support for a defeated presidential candidate.

It’s after 9PM in Tehran… they may be in for a rough night.

11:56AM: Looks like those ‘gunshots’ found flesh… AP photog reports at least one dead.

12:19PM: Maybe I didn’t jump the gun on that conspiracy theory…

Also, Andrew Sullivan links to a story about Tehran University professors resigning.

12:32PM: Two interesting videos out there… note the large crowd that Ahmadinejad pulled in at a ‘victory’ event today in this video and I’ll post the other, a riveting report from the BBC below.

Note the ‘We Want Freedom’ chants. While some on the Right are chiding Obama for his lack of support for the protesters, I disagree. The President is doing the right thing here. Stay quiet, let this happen on it’s own. I’m not suggesting Iran is quite ripe enough for a ‘Freedom’ revolution just yet but American influence at this moment would do more for Ahmadinejad supporters than it would for the protesters. This is getting interesting…

12:42PM: I haven’t said this publicly, but I enjoy Fareed Zakaria’s work… this is a perfect example of why I feel that way.

12:58PM: It’s getting bloody out there…

APTOPIX Mideast Iran Elections

Rumor has it there may be another major opposition speech tonight.

01:04PM: For those of you who are confused, here’s a great Q&A from the BBC.

01:18PM: The opposition websites aren’t alone in their troubles…

iransitedown

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s website is having some troubles as well…

Also, check out Nate Silver’s analysis of the poll that showed Amadinejad ahead.

01:23PM:Here’s a big one… it looks like Obama may address the situation at 5PM.

02:05PM: More blood…

I’m not buying the LA Riots comparison

02:05PM: An amazing report from Channel 4 is well worth your time.

Allah Pundit, whom I normally am in agreement with, slams Obama for his silence. While I don’t disagree that Obama should make some sort of statement (and word is he will do just that at 5PM), I think I would prefer a written statement condemning the aggressive attacks on protesters. If this is happening virally, why force it? Why risk pushing these protesters a few steps back and making the U.S. look like the international police outfit many Persians are weary of? This should be dealt with using a light hand diplomatically and (though I think a statement of some sort would be welcome) I think the Obama administration is handling this well by not handling it at all.

03:05PM: AMAZING photo set

Asked if there was any evidence of Iran rigging this election a CNN host said ‘no, nothing’. While there may not be any concrete evidence at this point — and I’m doubtful we’ll ever truly know — the circumstatial evidence is piling up faster than it did in the early states of the O.J. Simpson case. Then again, O.J. got off scot-free — the first time.

03:15PM: This may be when the President chimes in…

COMING UP — MEETING BERLUSCONI: The White House expects Obama to get a question about Iran during his pool spray with Silvio Berlusconi, though the subject was not in his prepared remarks, as of early Monday afternoon. (3:42 p.m.)

03:37PM: The U.S. State Department is ‘deeply troubled‘ by recent events in Iran.

THE HEAVY HAND:

Intelligence calling homes and play recording saying “u participated in today’s march, don’t repeat”

03:45PM: Could there really have been 2 to 3 million at today’s protest? Time says yes.

Iranian Protesters Taunt Ahmadinejad – ‘Down With The Dictator’

Edit: They’re actually saying “I will fight, I will die, I will get my vote back”

I’m fully aware that this could all die down tomorrow. I’m aware that the Ayatullah would like it to — that’s why he’s trying to ice protesters down by pushing for an investigation and buying 10 days time. But, if this were to lead to some sort of shift in Iranian politics, the political gold mine for the Obama administration is nearly incalculable. This would truly change the face of world events and have untold implications on North Korea and Venezuela; neither of which is the best of friends with the United States presently.

I’m not confident this will be anything other than a minor bump in Ahmadinejad’s road, though. And, truthfully, even if Moussavi wiggles into power somehow there won’t a true shift in Iranian politics until the Ayatullah starts feeling the heat. The ovens on, to be sure. But the cord could be cut at any minute and an icy relationship between Iran and the West could become even icier.

04:15PM: I’ve long been a critic of Twitter. Even though I have my own account there (@TheNewsJunkie) with a few thousand followers, I think the site and it’s usefulness are way over-hyped. I could lay out a case for that point here but I won’t. Twitter has been an amazing tool for those in Iran who are among the opposition — that much cannot be denied. So, tell me, please, why in the hell they would they shut the site down for maintenance tonight (of all nights) when they are at their best? 90 minutes is an eternity here…

On Moussavi’s Name: I’m seeing both spellings – Moussavi and Mousavi… Sticking with 2 S’s.

04:41PM: Still waiting for the Obama/Berlusconi pool report…

05:01PM: Politico gives us an update….

The pool is in with POTUS and Italy’s president. Stay tuned for details…

05:07PM: Jesus. If you do nothing else today, watch this video… and tell a friend.

05:07PM: Moussavi vows to fight on

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) — Iranian presidential candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi told followers Monday he will “pay any cost” to contest the country’s presidential election results, but said he had little hope his challenge would succeed.

Moussavi made his first public appearance since Friday’s vote during a massive rally in central Tehran. He has alleged fraud and filed a complaint with Iran’s Guardian Council, which oversees elections, but he said the council had not remained neutral in Friday’s vote.

“I don’t have any hope in them,” he said in a statement posted on his campaign’s Web site Monday evening.

How could it be… that a story dominating the cycle isn’t even in Google Trends top 100?

Are you serious? The President finally makes a statement and it’s as watered down as ‘Iran should choose it’s own leaders’? Seriously? I take back my earlier compliment to the administration. If anything positive comes of this, the Obama administration stumbled onto a victory they haven’t earned.

08:07PM: Twitter reschedules planned maintenance. Nice work.

11:40PM: Politico’s crib notes sucked on this. Though Obama is way too generic and in no way deserves credit for any changes (changes that probably won’t actually occur in Iran) he hasn’t thwarted their attempts either. This is like Bill Clinton’s populism on steroids. The ultimate I-take-no-positions-that-will-seem-offensive stance will do nothing to push forward reform in the countries that need it most… Obama was no help in Lebanon… but they’re moving in the right direction on their own. Let’s hope Iran follows in those footsteps…
