It looks like the President has changed his mind about releasing ‘thousands’ of new detainee photos before the end of the month. Generals Odierno, McKiernan and Petraeus have all argued Obama’s move to release the controversial snapshots (some of which are said to feature detainees who appear to have been beaten) would endanger troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In truth, the tidal wave of retaliation would go much further than the Middle East.

I’ve never understood the Obama administration’s argument on these photos. They claim that a case pushing for the release of the controversial shots is one that they have no chance in winning. With a clear loss in sight, they’d rather release the photos now. But to think that somehow radical Islamists (or moderates, even) will see the release of the photos as a gesture of openness from the Obama administration and not as an incredibly powerful recruiting tool is insane. People will die as a result of these photos surfacing. Things will heat up in Iraq and the people of Afghanistan, along with coalition soldiers, will suffer more — all in the interest of ‘openness’.
The naivety of Obama’s inner circle is astounding.
Update: Obama responds
I’ve never understood the left’s desire to keep picking the scab off that particular wound. Maybe it’s BDS to the nth degree? Release the photos to gin up enough popular support of arresting Bush and Cheney?
