The Brink Of War – North And South Korea Play Chicken

Never underestimate the lunacy of Kim Jong Il. The tiny leader of the hermit nation of North Korea is a big fan of movies. It’s been said that his collection fills several rooms in his Pyongyang home. What if he wanted to create an explosive flick of his own, right here in the real world?

The United States has nearly 30,000 troops on standby in South Korea and military officials in Seoul are lining up warships offshore. Everyone is on high alert.

North Korea has made it clear that they’ll listen to no one and act as they please. Kim Jong Il cares not about U.N. Resolutions and truly pines for attention (good or bad). The North has operable nuclear weapons and Kim Jong Il is just crazy enough to launch one at South Korea. The result would be horrific. Not only would tens of thousands die from the blast, the sure-to-follow war would kill multiples of that number.

You see, the North Koreans really are a bunch of hermits. The only way to watch or listen to anything other than State media is to tamper with the modified televisions and radio sets sold in that country. Sure, there’s a work-around. But officials actually check radios to ensure they haven’t been messed with and the punishments for doing so are steep. The bottom line is, most North Koreans don’t know how bad they have it or how crazy their leader is. Any invading army would face a band of hyper-patriots determined to fight to the death (see: Imperial Japan) to defend their land. It won’t end well.

The protests in Seoul are heated (as depicted above) and South Koreans, tired from years of monetary support to the unpredictable North, are fed up. Think of it this way, your country has tried and tried to work with its neighbor and time and time again that neighbor has rebuffed all offers.

This quote says it all:

“We sent them food, fertilizer, factories, more than we give our own poor people,” said the South Korean, Lee Soon-hwan, a 30-year-old office worker. “And all they pay us back with is this nuclear test.”

The ’surveillance alert’ stands at a ‘2′ in the region — the highest level being 1 and the North looks like they’re positioning to pounce on West Sea islands they’ve had their eyes on for some time now.

Something has to be done eventually… but what?

You could make the argument that North Korea has played this game before. But something seems different this time. Kim Jong Il seems just a little more desperate and even less sane than in the past. His health is failing and it might be on his agenda to ‘go out with a bang’. Kim doesn’t seem to have much faith in his potential successors and, like those movies he enjoys so much, maybe this real life scenario ends with a rash of bad decisions and the death of countless Koreans. Maybe it all ends in a fireball. It’s not like he has a spotless legacy to protect.
