Cheney, Bush Enjoy Popularity Surge In New Poll

The big buzz today is all about the battle of whits (albeit on different battlefields) between former Vice President Dick Cheney and President Barack Obama. But flying around just under the radar is a poll refuting the argument that Dick Cheney’s recent actions have been bad for Republicans. 41% of Americans now have a ‘favorable’ opinion of the former Vice President, up from 33% in January.

The ‘Polling Director’ for CNN, Keating Holland, takes a bizarre angle on Cheney’s popularity surge. “Is Cheney’s uptick due to his visibility as one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration? Almost certainly not,” Holland says.

Holland’s flimsy argument centers on the point that President Bush has seen a similar rise in his ‘favorability’ rating during the same period of time. What he fails to grasp is the simple fact that the major factor pushing both the former President and Vice President’s ratings upward is Dick Cheney’s media tour. Are we to believe Americans are letting bygones be bygones? How could they possibly forget about the previous administration when President Obama talks into any mic that looks hot to remind the public that everything is his predecessor’s fault?

The media goons have been shouting from the rooftops to anyone in earshot that ‘Cheney is terrible for the GOP’. As it turns out, they were wrong. Again.

A certain section of the public is clearly sympathetic to Dick Cheney’s argument. As Obama fumbles around looking for a plan to deal with GITMO prisoners that he should have devised before vowing to close Guantanamo Bay, President Bush and Dick Cheney seem to be making a slow comeback. And while CNN’s ‘Polling Director’ doesn’t seem to have a clue why this mysterious surge in popularity is occurring, I’d say it’s clearly related to Cheney’s defense of Bush administration policies. In a media climate where no one seems to want to call President Obama on his broken promises, the public seems to be rewarding those brave enough to dissent.
