WASHINGTON – The Obama administration has lost its argument that a potential threat to national security is a good enough reason to stop a lawsuit challenging the government’s warrantless wiretapping program.
A federal appeals court in San Francisco on Friday rejected the Justice Department’s request for an emergency stay. The Obama administration, like the Bush administration before it, cited the so-called state secrets privilege as its defense. The government claimed national security would be compromised if a lawsuit brought by the U.S. chapter of an Islamic charity was allowed to proceed.
The case was brought by the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, a defunct charity with a chapter in Oregon.
Wow. Let me get this straight. A Islamic ‘charity’ known as ‘Al Haramain, based in Saudi Arabia, has manipulated our judicial system and found a sympathetic audience in a San Francisco courtroom (via the infamous 9th Circuit). This ‘charity’, banned by the United Nations, and branded as a front for al-Qaeda, is set to put what both parties of Congress deem as a necessary intelligence program on trial. This group, proud former-home to a dozen GITMO detainees, is using a Democratic lawmaker by the name of Tom Nelson to legitimize their cause. It all seems like a bad dream…
They were clearly snooping on this particular group but, from what I can tell, they had every reason to believe they were up to something. This should be interesting…
