Israel says it’s refusing to allow the delivery because macaroni isn’t ‘an essential food item’. A few years back and a few dollars ago, I virtually lived on macaroni and cheese so I would take them to task on their food item classification methods if this weren’t such a ridiculous story. Why not check the shipment for weapons and if it has none, and it is clearly a ‘food item’, let it pass on through. I understand that Hamas often steals deliveries like this and keeps them from the citizens of Gaza but if Israel makes it quite clear that the macaroni is passing through, Hamas will be forced to lay off.
JERUSALEM — For more than seven weeks, the international aid group Mercy Corps has been trying to send 90 tons of macaroni to the isolated Gaza Strip as part of a global campaign to help the 1.4 million Palestinians there rebuild their lives after Israel’s recent devastating 22-day military operation.
Israel, which controls most of what goes into and out of Gaza, has said no repeatedly.
Only between Israel and Gaza can macaroni become controversial.
