Obama Sets Meeting With Chavez

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: United States President, Barack Obama will have a face-to-face meeting with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez in April in Port of Spain, when the two leaders will be among three dozen heads of government and state at the three day Summit of the Americas.

This information was confirmed by Summit Secretariat Communications Co-ordinator, Felipe Noguera.

On the agenda? Energy issues, apparently. But does anyone in their right mind think Hugo Chavez will stick to that (or any other) agenda? This is a guy who does a TV show, called Halo Presidente, where he sometimes rambles on for more than five hours. Do we really think President Obama can get anywhere with this megalomaniac? Or will this simply validate Chavez on an international level?

  1. shfelby says:

What is this, more foreign oil dependency perhaps? Beholden to rogue regimes? The global economy is good and important, but dealing with Hugo Chavez seems like a waste of time.

  2. Wayne says:

They will be two among of 36 leaders and heads of state. This is not a planned trip just for the 2 of them. Chavez is already the leader of Venezuela, recognized on an international stage. He hardly needs validation, not from us or anyone.

What would be Obama’s wisest diplomatic action at the Summit of the Americas? Ignore Chavez?

    This is a dumb topic.

Shawn why aren’t you posting the news about the Democratic governor of New Hampshire, who just appointed another Republican to replace Senator Gregg, thus maintaining the current ratio in the senate? I recall you had a post the other day about that. Issue resolved. We can all be friends. Kumbayah.

  3. shfelby says:

Chavez called Israel Hitler, expelled their ambassadors from Venezuela and he is allied with a country that doesn’t recognize Israel as a sovereign country (which the international coummunity does). We all know that Chavez is the recognized leader of Venezuela, but why do you use language to defend a man that doesn’t share your sentiments?

  4. Wayne says:

I did not defend Chavez at all. I think he is a douche. The misleading headline of this post suggests that Obama planned a meeting specifically with Chavez which if you actually read the article is clearly not the case.

  5. shfelby says:

    Okay, fair enough.
