Is Michael Steele about to pull off a massive upset in the RNC chair race?:
As soon as Ken Blackwell said in his withdrawal address that the Republican Party had to be “the party of Lincoln,” a murmur of “he’s endorsing Steele” ran through the crowd around me.
The next ballot put Steele in the driver’s seat, and Anuzis became the distant third. It seems all 15 Blackwell backers followed their preferred candidate’s emphatic endorsement. Blackwell was running as “the outspoken conservative” in the race; his backing of Steele would seem to have deflected much of the “Steele is too moderate” talk.
The fifth ballot was Steele 79, Dawson 69, Anuzis 20. Then Anuzis stepped to the stage, withdrawing, and endorsing neither rival.
Rumor has it, the crowd is rallying around Steele… but what if they tie?
Michael Steele pulls it off — 91 to 77… making him the first black RNC chairman.
Awesome! I was hoping Newt would go for it, but this is just great. Let’s hope he can get the party back on track and put out the message.
Good for him and good for the GOP.
Too obvious, be prepared to wander in the
wilderness for quite a few decades.
Not to you. But the American People aka Loyalists
Very exciting news. I hope he emerges as a real leader for change within the GOP, and not another gimmick like Sarah Palin. Either way, it is exciting to see the GOP and the American public embrace diversity. Best of luck to Steele.
Sarah Palin is no gimmick. A new rasmussen poll shows that 55% of Republicans want the party to be more like Sarah Palin.
And I agree.
If diversity means different races and genders, well the party is more diverse than people think. GOP may not have many african americans in office but that isn’t from a lack of trying. In 2006 Ken Blackwell, Lynn Swann and Michael Steele all ran for office on the Republican ticket and all of them lost. And believe me, it wasn’t Republicans who weren’t voting for them.
But diversity in principles? I hope not. Some ideas may change from each candidate, but as long as conservatism is the core, then we’ll be fine.
Michael Steele holds those principles. Steele ran for RNC chair because he really, really, wanted it. He wanted it because he is a Republican, a strong one at that, and he hopes to help the party succeed.
No one sat around and said, “hey, you know what we need? an african american as RNC chair. Let’s get Michael to do it.”
He ran.
People liked him.
He won.
As for whether of not some Republicans voted for him because he is black, well who knows for sure.
85% of Democrats want the Republican party to be more like Sarah Palin. So they don’t have to pay any attention to the knuckle draggers of the Reich-wing. Just keep listening to what Uncle
Rush tells you to do.
What message? We got the message and said
“Hell No!”.
Why exactly is it obvious?
