Al Qaeda Leader Mocks Obama

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) – Al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader used a racial epithet to insult Barack Obama in a message posted Wednesday, describing the president-elect in demeaning terms that imply he does the bidding of whites.

The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Ayman al-Zawahri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites, that Obama is “the direct opposite of honorable black Americans” like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.

In al-Qaida’s first response to Obama’s victory, al-Zawahri also called the president-elect—along with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice—”house negroes.”

It’s a pretty wide-ranging address from al-Zawahri and he spends a lot of time focusing on (and even playing audio of pronouncements from) Malcom-X. It comes off as a bit odd that an al-Qaeda leader seems to be feeling out the coming Obama Administration but Zawahri makes it clear that he is not fond of the new leader and his apparent support for Israel.

The most comical part of this announcement is Zawahri’s attempt to claim victory (once again) in both Iraq and Afghanistan — two places where al-Qaeda forces have been decimated over the past five years. He even warns his supporters of a coming claim to victory from U.S. forces as they pull out of Iraq and shift focus to Afghanistan. Finally, Zawahri mentions and praises jihadis in Somalia. Northeast Somalia and Yemen have become major safe havens for al-Qaeda fighters looking for something new. Those fighters have led to the instability that created the atmosphere and ability for pirates to take over the waters near Somalia and what will surely be a rising front in the War on Terror.
