Russian Forces Invade Georgia

Russian aircraft attacked a military base near the capital Tbilisi, a spokesman for the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

The military operation marks the first time Russian troops have taken action on foreign soil since the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989.

Russian Channel 1 television showed a convoy of Russian tanks which it said entered South Ossetia. It said it was expected to reach the provincial capital, Tskhinvali, in a few hours.

There was no immediate comment from Georgian officials. Georgian troops had earlier launched a massive attack to regain control of breakaway South Ossetia, where officials said at least 15 people were killed and an unspecified number of people wounded.

The move by Russian troops followed a series of statements by Russian leaders pledging to protect Russian citizens in the region in the face of a massive Georgian military attack on South Ossetia.

This is a confusing one… Let’s take a look at the map…

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev later chaired a session of his security council in the Kremlin, vowing that Moscow will protect Russian citizens.

“In accordance with the constitution and the federal law, I, as president of Russia, am obliged to protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are located,” Mr Medvedev said in televised remarks. “We won’t allow the death of our compatriots to go unpunished.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry denounced the Georgian attack as a “dirty adventure.”

OK, so South Ossetia is essentially a breakaway segment of Georgia populated by mostly Russian citizens. It’s not unlike Palestine in some ways. It’s been in a suspended conflict for some time as has Abkhazia, another breakaway segment in Georgia. Strange thing is, the Telegraph has two stories on this ongoing event. One of them is titled ‘Russia ‘invades’ South Ossetia as conflict with Georgia escalates‘ and the other is ‘Causcus in crisis: Georgia invades rebel region’. What I’m piecing together is late last night Georgia moved on South Ossetia and Russia responded by bombing the hell out of them. Georgia retaliated by shooting down two Russian planes and it looks like we’re just getting started. What a way to kick off thee Olympics.

Update: Judging by the action in this video… things are getting hot an heavy.

This is the beginning of an invasion . The Russians have been seeking grounds to test their armour in a long while . Lets see how the Americans will respond to this . These Russians are good at provoking the West .

I believe this is a move by Russia to gain more control of the land and sea near Turkey and to position themselves in such a way that it will be easier to survey western activities. As a student of Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet international relations, this is exactly the type of thing I write (and warn) about in many of my research papers. Like I have always said, it is only a matter of time before Russia gets too bored to stay put.

    Giggabyte, and Dustilee:
    I agree with you both.
Dustilee: I have a question for you. I have read that Russia, Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba may form an alliance and put a stranglehold on oil. In your research have you come across anything that points in this direction? I have read that Russia is upset that we (the U.S.) wants to put a missile defense system in eastern Europe, they want to put missiles in Cuba in retaliation. I found one article on this and then it disappeared, have you found anything?
