Gustav Chugs Toward New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – Lines of people waiting for buses to take them out of the city grew longer Saturday and traffic grew heavier on main highways as Hurricane Gustav strengthened into a dangerous Category 4 storm on track for the Gulf Coast.

A line well over a mile long stretched in six loops through the parking lot at Union Passenger Terminal. Under a blazing sun, many led children or pushed strollers with one hand and pulled luggage with the other. Volunteers handed out bottled water, and medics were nearby in case people became heatsick.

Joseph Jones Jr., 61, wore a towel over his head to block the sun. He’d been in line 2 1/2 hours, but wasn’t complaining. During Katrina, he had been stranded on a highway overpass.

“I don’t like it. Going someplace you don’t know, people you don’t know,” Jones said. “And then when you come back, is your house going to be OK?”

The media, along with Michael Moore, seems to be praying for a direct hit on New Orleans. I’m glad to see these people getting a head start on evacuation. I hate to say it but I don’t have much confidence in the local authorities in New Orleans. Ray Nagin screwed the pooch last time and I wouldn’t put it past him to leave the school buses parked this time around.

With Gustav bordering on Cat 5 status, what will become of the RNC?

Double Trouble:

Update: New Orleans is now officially being evacuated. Better safe than sorry.

Update: Here’s a look behind the scenes with Fox News in New Orleans.

it looks like reverand wright was right that god is punishing america for the killing of innocent people in iraq and afghanistan since those helpless people can’t fire missile to american cities then god will do that for them by the weakest weapon around which is the blowing of air first was katrina for kabul and now gustav for baghdad however america is a terrible place to live in and i think the people of the old world before columbus was smart not to go to america snow in the north hurricane in the south tornados in the med west rain in seatle wind in chicago earthquake in california should we say america is blessing or a curse to the world

it is time that we should consider not building cities in the path of major disasters and I think leaving the gulf coast as a natural park and some temporary activities like oil , military , mining and mill plants

Your not kidding Mary… If these folks stand in the way of a major storm living below sea water… what do they expect?

Tom: what kind of idiotic crap is that you are writing. Do you think that the United States is the only place that there is weather? Hurricanes have been hitting North America since before written records, snow happens anywhere it gets cold, wind happens where there are convergences of frontal systems, rain happens everywhere also, earthquakes although not weather, happen on every fault line seperating continental plates. If you live in the U.S. and you hate it so much why don’t you leave, please. We have many different cultures living in harmony, freedom of religion, (why the new world was inhabited by Europeaners) freedom of speech, (which is what gives you the right to be hateful of the U.S.) the citizens are the most generous in the world. No other government or citizenry offers more help to the world during disasters. So did God kill the people in Haiti when Gustav hit there? How about the loss of lives in Cuba? Did God kill 70,000 people in China because their government is Communist? So instead of killing the whole world like he did in the big flood saving only Noah and his family, he is killing only a few at a time. The only thing Reverand Wright is correct on is being an anti-American racist. The U.S. may not be perfect but we are the best place to live in the world right now.

Mary: so we need to move all people out of the way of natural disasters? Where will we all go? Empty California, there might be an earthquake or wildfire or mudslide. Move everyone out of the mid-west and away from any river that may flood. We will also need to move everyone from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and anywhere else a tornado could happen. Then we need to move everyone from Hawaii, a tsunami could hit there. Alaska has earthquakes and snow. All of the Eastern seaboard and gulf coast could be hit by a hurricane. Where will we put 300 million people Mary. Where do you live that is not in the path of any possible natural disaster. Come on Mary, give us some answers not just stupid remarks, where is the citizenry of the world going to live.

Shawn: why do I keep posting answers to all these stupid people. Are there that many unintelligent people who write stupid remarks to these blogs. Should I just go away and keep my answers to myself?

BadBoy: Marys point is that they are living below sea level in an area that is prone to hurricanes. This is akin to the folks that live right next to the Mississippi River and are surprised when they get flooded. Or the folks that build their house on a cliff in California and are shocked when the mudslide takes their home with it. I agree with her (in essence), if you want to live there, be my guest, it’s a free country, but, when don’t expect me to bail you out with my tax dollars.

Peeved guy: thats what she may have meant but it is not what she wrote. I only take people for what they write and not what I think they meant. If I got it wrong shame on me for not figuring out what the intent of peoples writing is.

Point taken, BADBOY… I’m taking the liberty of explaining what Mary meant when she wrote what she wrote. I’ll let her do that.

But, I stand by what I wrote; just take out the first three words in my post.
