U.S. Moves To ‘Heightened Alert’ Stage

Government officials have been quietly stepping up counterterror efforts out of a growing concern that al Qaeda or similar organizations might try to capitalize on the spate of extremely high-profile events in the coming months, sources tell ABC News.
Homeland security is on alert with Olympics near, elections on horizon.

Security experts point to next month’s Olympics as evidence that high-profile events attract threats of terrorism, like the one issued this past weekend by a Chinese Muslim minority group that warned of its intent to attack the Games.

Anti-terror officials in the U.S. cite this summer and fall’s lineup of two major political parties’ conventions, November’s general election and months of transition into a new presidential administration as cause for heightened awareness and action.

This is what the Department of Homeland Security is quietly declaring a Period of Heightened Alert, or POHA, a time frame when terrorists may have more incentive to attack.

You’ve got the RNC and DNC within the next 90 days so this is really no surprise.

  1. Flip says:

The Badministration is trying to help out McCain who is perceived as stronger on security than Obama. This is B.S. as usual. Also to take away the spotlight from Obama, and to take away the spotlight on Conde’s trip to New Zealand where they’ve taken up a fund as a reward to anyone who places her under Citizen’s Arrest for war crimes. Isn’t that nice? I prefer the receptions Obama gets

  2. Peeved Guy says:

And yet, if something were to happen, then it would be the “badministrations” fault for not taking precautions to prevent such an occurrence.

Government officials have been quietly stepping up counterterror efforts…

If they really wanted to take the spotlight away from the Obamessiah or from some kooks in NZ trying to place a foreign diplomat (good luck with that) under citizens arrest, would they be doing it “quietly”?

  3. Flip says:

That’s exactly why they can get away with it. Because they win in either case: If there is no attack they were supposedly prepared and if there is an attack they publicly warned us. Isn’t that convenient

  4. Peeved Guy says:

Meh, to-ma-to, to-mah-to. It’s not really a convenience (or a “win” or a “loss”) for either “side” since they both can get some sort of political capital from it.

The only real winner are the people of the US if there are no more attacks, no matter what the reason or who is responsible.

  5. Flip says:

Exactly, once again. Frightening us with terror threats does nothing to protect us. They’ve already proven that they don’t know how to protect us. They allowed 911 to happen and they haven’t implemented 90% of the recommendations made afterwards that were suggested to protect us. They created the Office of Homeland Security in order to give money to republican districts for things like antique shows in Tennessee and Indiana. They diverted every resource we have including our National Guard to Iraq and killed 4200 more Americians! not to mention hundreds of thousands of Iraqi’s who posed NO THREAT to us whatsover. There have been no prosecutions of terrorists and Osama Bin Laden stronger than ever.

  6. Peeved Guy says:

“They’ve already proven that they don’t know how to protect us” – how? I figure they’ve done well so far

“They allowed 911 to happen and they haven’t implemented 90% of the recommendations made afterwards that were suggested to protect us.” – Even you have to admit that the Clinton “badministration” has more than a little culpability in 911, no matter how red he turns when questioned about it.

“They created the Office of Homeland Security in order to give money to republican districts for things like antique shows in Tennessee and Indiana.” – What?

“They diverted every resource we have including our National Guard to Iraq and killed 4200 more Americians! not to mention hundreds of thousands of Iraqi’s who posed NO THREAT to us whatsover.” – Every resource we have? Really? That’s drifting into the realm of hyperbole. And the ‘hundreds of thousands of Iraqis’ fable has be debunked on several occasions.

“There have been no prosecutions of terrorists and Osama Bin Laden stronger than ever.” There actually have been several and I dismiss the statement that OBL is stronger than when he was thumbing his nose at Clinton.

  7. BADBOYMEE says:

    Flip:
Please tell me when that antique sale in TN is going to happen, I need some more antiques. Also please tell us your resources for your info, I hope its not Randi (the left wing liberal, socialist, progressive, clueless, I have white guilt, bitch) Rhodes. I try to listen to her but she spouts more hate and trash then Rush and Hannity combined. Plus I love when she says things like “Iraquis liked us until Bush invaded and occupied their country” So does that mean they liked us when Clinton was throwing cruise missiles at them, in 96 and 98? WJNO needs to run her from midnight to 3 am. By the way TN has a Democratic governor Phil Bredesen. What republican districts are getting too much money NYC, Washington DC. Flip, Flip, Flip, please stop listening to the financially bankrupt air America and the morally bankrupt nova m left wing anti America rhetoric, do your own research. The truth will set you free.

  8. Dave K says:

    Flip,

How many attacks have there been since 9/11 here? Say it with me….zero. As much as you don’t want to admit it, the Bush administration is keeping you and your family safer than ever. Of course, you could have Obama who has said that Iran is no big deal. Let him try and talk to those countries that want to hurt us. Unless he is able to talk off a teleprompter with them, he will be lost. Unless, they get confused with his stuttering and he confuses them bad enough.

  9. Flip says:

Of the safety you claim to be revelling in: tell it to all the people who have lost their homes in the mortgage crises, their sons and daughters in the war, their neighborhoods in New Orleans, their bridge in Minnesota, the list goes on. And if you think a man who’s strongest argument for becoming president is that he got shot down and captured in a war we lost, your hopeless, Dave

  10. Peeved Guy says:

Jeez, Flip. Way to divert the conversation. I think the topic was specifically geared toward terrorism, not all of the other things you cite (all of which, by the way can be directly traced to previous administrations, both local and federal, republican and democratic). Trying to tie the woes of every person in the country/world to GWB and Dick Cheney just make you look myopic, hyper-partisan and bitter.

And as far as your last sentence goes, that was borderline reprehensible. I have no love for Senator McCain, but I do respect him, especially his service to his county. Given the choice between a “man who’s strongest argument for becoming president is that he got shot down and captured in a war we lost” and one who never altruistically served his country in ANY capacity (oh, wait, he was a ‘community organizer’, whatever the hell that means) and can’t even interrupt his busy workout schedule to spare an hour to visit some wounded service members, I’ll take the former.

  11. Lady Liberty says:

    Hey Dave,
There was an attack yesterday in Tennessee by a terrorist. There was an attack in Virginia last year by a terrorist. Our government has become the terrorist in Iraq.

  12. Peeved Guy says:

TERRORIST as defined by Webster: the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion

How was one guy pissed at the liberal agenda going batshit crazy and killing some people all of a sudden a terrorist? How was one incident “systematic”? Or coercive? Same goes for the kid at Virginia Tech. Tragic, yes, terrorist, no.

“Our government has become the terrorist in Iraq.” Ah yes, the leftie mantra. That is really the most effective way to demoralize and insult any person who has EVER worn the uniform of one of the armed services of our country. Thanks for your support.

  13. Lady Liberty says:

Troops do what they are told by way of the Commander-in-Chief. I don’t blame troops for doing their job. I blame the people telling them to do untenable things. I Blame Bush and his advisors. A majority of troops supported a change in the Commander-in-Chief in the last election and they do again in this one.

  14. Flip says:

“You don’t support the troops, you don’t support the troops. Na, na, na, na, na. You’re unpatriotic”. typical con artist BULL

  15. Peeved Guy says:

You seem to be a bit contrary in your statement. They just mindlessly do what they are told, but the majority of them supported the CiC in the last election and will do it again. Which is it? Are they pawns of the evil American Imperial Empire or are they free people, doing what they believe is right?

Also, what, in your view, are the untenable things they are being ordered to do? Just curious.

  16. Peeved Guy says:

“You don’t support the troops, you don’t support the troops. Na, na, na, na, na. You’re unpatriotic”. typical con artist BULL

Puh-leese. I never once said that “support of troops” = “patriot” or the inverse. Lady Liberty said that our government has become the terrorist. That statement implies (at the very least) that the people doing the terrorizing are our service members, or, “US armed forces” = “terrorists”, I take offense at that. Unless you think that GW and Cheney take time out of their busy schedules and are personally terrorizing the people in Iraq?

  17. Flip says:

Lady Liberty said “Our government has become the terrorist” She never mentioned the troops. YOU did, and that is what the Bushies always do to anyone who questions them. They say you denigrate the troops.

  18. Peeved Guy says:

I only say you denigrate the troops when you do.

If the government is the terrorist and the troops are the arm of the government that would do said terrorizing, what else am I supposed to take away from the conversation?

And let me tell you this as well, there is a very well publicized clause of the UCMJ (look it up) that instructs service member to DISOBEY an illegal order. In other words, if a soldier were to be order to raze a village and kill everyone in it, (s)he would have a duty to disobey that order. This means two things: 1) if a soldier does something like that it’s on HIS head, not necessarily the “powers that be” (i.e. Abu Graib) 2) every time you accuse the “government” or “administration” or Bush of being a terrorist, you are, by extension, calling every services member to a person in Iraq either utterly incompetent and stupid or just a terrorist. I take exception to both.

I don’t care what you call the president, really I don’t, but don’t disparage the folks in uniform and hide behind false patriotism to avoid being called out on it.

  19. Flip says:

Bush terrorizes all of us every time he let’s the government issue “Heightened Alerts” for terrorism

  20. Lady Liberty says:

They terrorized us all by shamelessly using the “mushroom cloud” imagery. All 3 of those people; Rice, Cheney and Bush said they didn’t want the proof of Iraq’s weapons to come in the form of a mushroom cloud. It has been proven that they new it was NOT TRUE. They terrorized us and used it as an excuse to rape Iraq. And there still trying to do it.

  21. Peeved Guy says:

Rape Iraq how, exactly? Of what? Oil? And I seem to recall that while we now say “Bush lied to get us into Iraq”, why don’t people blame ALL of the politicians that were in power at that time? Because I seem to remember Hillary, Edwards and several others (republican AND dems) calling for the outing of the eeeviiiil Saddam regime because he has WMD.

Being critical of the current administration for not properly preparing for the aftermath I feel is more than justified (for example), but to trot out that tired old “They is using the politics of fear to control us!” meme is getting tiresome.

  22. Buckley says:

With Al Qaida being a CIA black op, a terrorist attack will be made to order if the circumstances warrant it: Like impeachment hearings (ever wonder why Congress has been so recalcitrant, with all the impeachable offenses in the public record?), or an Obama election victory. The neocons are falling out of favor with the world’s true dictators, the owners of the central banks, and will likely do anything to avoid their coming call to accountability, and the new batch of puppets is being readied. The major threat to America now is Globalists, of whatever party, and they’re all singing that same tune. World dictatorship here we come! Carbon credits anyone?

  23. Peeved Guy says:

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more entertaining in this thread…

  24. Lady Liberty says:

42% of terrorist organizations end because they become part of legitimate politics.

40% of terrorist organizations end because they are caught through law enforcement.

10% of terrorist organizations end because they win their objectives.

7% of terrorist organizations end because of military intervention.

TELL ME WHAT WE ARE DOING IN IRAQ?
