CNN: Your Child Is A Racist Bigot

I’m already laughing in CNN’s general direction over a few things but this story takes the cake. Last night, they let Jesse Jackson apologize on-air for what seemed like 30 minutes and then they all talked about what a great guy he was and how he clearly didn’t mean to say he wanted to cut Barack Obama’s ‘nuts off’. Add to that this ridiculous 2 part series ‘Black In America‘ they’ve been promoting non-stop and we’re already in some bizarre land of dealing with race-relations with kid gloves on a major cable network. Not satisfied with their positioning on this particular issue, CNN rolls on. Now, not only are all non-black Americans racist and indignant, your children are much of the same. This video piece, aired today on CNN International and featured prominently on CNN.com, discusses how children as young as three are blatant racists. The woman being interviewed tries to duck and dive a bit on the topic but you get the point. We’re all racists. All of us except Jesse Jackson, of course. Maybe someone ‘cut [CNN's] nuts off’?

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea to raise awareness of racism. Often, people don’t even realize their own racist tendencies. I would guess that if you asked a racist if he or she was a racist, the answer would be “no”. If you asked Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Bill O’Rielly if they are racist, they would deny it, though they definitely are based on the things I’ve heard them say.

That’s fine. It’s fine to talk about racism. It’s not fine to placate to black audiences like CNN has done over the last year or so. Their coverage of the Jena 6 story was atrocious. We’re talking about children here… and we’re teaching them that they are hateful people at such a young age. It’s foolish and CNN is foolish for doing it.

Can’t seem to get anywhere with the pic link.

Hmm I watched this video and didn’t hear the term “blatant racist” at any point. She started the interview by clarifying the terminology, saying the word “racist” was “a bit heavy”. She used the term “racially prejudiced”, meaning making judgements based on differences in skin color. She is making the case that it is important to talk about race at the age children start to notice it, around age 3. At what point did she say anything about “teaching them that they are hateful people at such a young age.” Where did CNN say or imply that all non-black Americans are racists? I don’t get it.

In my opinion, racism (or racial prejudice, whatever) is part of the human condition. All of us make snap judgements about other people we see. Sometimes those judgements are based on race. Many times those judgements are unfair and have very negative consequences for all of us. Why is it bad to have this discussion on CNN? Maybe the viewers will learn something.
